“The Way of Men” by Jack Donovan – as Reviewed by Chris Duffin
“The Way of Men” by Jack Donovan is being released today. This book pulls together Jack’s research and thought on what it is to be a man and articulates it in a manner that I found to be one of the best reads I’ve had in a long time. I’ll admit I am perhaps a little partial to the subject as it is also a core foundation of my own website and being a better man is core part of my personal philosophy. His book helped me reflect further on not only understanding what it is to be a man, but also the impacts being a man has fitting into today’s society, as well as the future of men.
Some may find this book controversial as Jack takes a look at what it is to be good at being a man without overlaying any morality. This allows him to dive deeper into understanding and articulating these concepts by not applying these moral filters and address the true root of The Way of Men. He does not say that any of it is right or wrong, but only addresses ‘what is’. The traits that Men developed to be successful through thousands of years of Tribal living do not always lend themselves to behaviors based around morality. This does not make men bad, nor does it control or make men act in an immoral manner. These are simply the traits and behaviors based on man’s tribal past that are with men today.
I am still wrapping my head around Jack’s book and the implications and impact on my role not only in society but among men.
If you have ever asked yourself any of the following questions I highly recommend you get a copy:
- What is it to be a man?
- What is Masculinity
- What makes a man good at being a man?
- What is the difference between being a good person and being good at being a man?
- How do men fit in society and among groups of other men?
- What are the Virtues of Man? (interestingly of the 4 virtues discussed in his book 3 of them are the central them of my website)
- What is the “Decline of Males” or the “Crisis of Masculinity”?
Jack also addresses the compromises men make to live in, and reap the benefits of, civilized society compared to their brutish tribal past. This book is a terrific read and significantly thought provoking, despite it making me reach the conclusion that an impending zombie apocalypse might just be the best future for men.
