RECENT INTERVIEW

I was recently interviewed for the Interview for the Manly Excellence website by Jack Donovan the author of The Way of Men.  We had a lengthy and engaging conversation on achieving success.

Chris has a good story. You can read more about it on his web site. The short version is [summary removed] Say what you want about the state of the American Dream, but this guy has managed to pull it off.

For the benefit of men in pursuit of
Manly Excellence, I thought I’d ask Chris a few questions about staying motivated and succeeding where other men fail.

JACK: I’d like to think that most men at least try to set goals for themselves, but it’s easy to get distracted, and so many goals never make it past the daydreaming stage. Chris, how do you decide where you are going to focus your energy, and how do you keep yourself on task once you get started?

CHRIS: It’s absolutely essential that goals make it past the daydreaming stage. I grew up with some smart parents who were dreamers. My stepfather would tell me about product ideas, and sure enough years later I would see his ideas for sale on TV. He never set down the beer and got off the couch. It’s all about action. Every dream must be flushed out to a vision to really make it an achievable dream and not just that “dream.” I visualize all the steps needed to accomplish my goal and I map out all of the different alternatives and obstacles I may encounter. Without a clear vision you can’t put your energy in the right direction or see all those little steps along the way being completed, getting you one step closer to your goal.

DEAR COACH QUESTION ON BREAKING MUSCLE
As an update I have also partnered with Breaking Muscle to become a staff writer.  I will be writting articles, video's, and answering questions.  Here is a recent Q&A excerpt:

Dear Coach,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on protein intake. Recently I've been eating a bit more but my meals haven't been balanced and I feel like my progress is shortened to a point because of it. Today for breakfast I randomly decided to have a huge breakfast consisting of lots of grains, fruits, vitamins, and oatmeal. This breakfast totaled out to be about 70-90 grams of protein, as well as lots of calories and carbs. This is one of the first times I have ever eaten a breakfast this big and it had a huge effect on my vitality and energy throughout the day.

My fitness goals are to gain weight (roughly 10 to fifteen lbs) but I have no scale to measure myself with. So I have two curiosities here. The first being if you have any opinion on whether eating that much protein and eating light and healthy meals throughout the day will help me reach my goals. I find when I eat big suppers and relatively small breakfasts the meals I eat throughout the day don't feel like they're going down well. My second curiosity is any tips or advice you have that could help me towards my goal of gaining 15lbs without a scale to know if I really am or not. I'll be getting a job possibly in a few weeks so if I do I'll buy a scale. But in the meantime I was wondering if you could help me with this.
Thanks,Tyler

Dear Tyler -

It appears your goal is clearly defined. A pretty easy conclusion for me to jump to is that you are also looking to add this as primarily lean mass as opposed to fat stores. Goals of adding lean mass are pretty common place in the areas that I coach (strength athletes), so I am quite familiar with a number of strategies that have worked well on me and those I coach.

Before getting into the discussion on diet I would like to start with your second point in regards to measuring your progress.
